Nibbles on the Northshore

Chefs and restaurant owners on the Northshore know they’re competing with the globally renowned cuisine of New Orleans right across the lake, so these men and women have certainly stepped up their game. In fact, while you’ll find plenty of restaurants that serve up all your favorite Cajun and Creole dishes, there is an obvious focus on traditional and elevated seafood dishes due to the Northshore’s proximity to Lake Pontchartrain and the Gulf of Mexico. If you enjoy good food, this place is a dream.

Local Restaurants

The Northshore is filled with world-class culinary offerings from mouthwatering comfort foods to gourmet dishes. There are casual pizzerias, unique Asian offerings, delicious Mexican, upscale Italian trattorias, and a wide variety of fresh seafood. Given many of the picturesque settings on the Northshore, you’ll find an array of alfresco dining opportunities along lakes, rivers, and romantic waterways. Not only can you tour one of America’s leading craft breweries at Abita Brewing Company, you can also enjoy delicious pub food at its nearby restaurant in addition to a number of other outstanding brewpubs and taprooms across the region.

Festivals

There is never, ever a shortage of food when it comes to a Louisiana festival. The Northshore serves up the gamut from BBQ shrimp, fried catfish, gumbo, charbroiled oysters, barbeque, crab cakes and much more. The largest one-day event on the Northshore is The All-you-can-eat Crawfish Cookoff in Slidell, which pits over 50 teams against each other boiling more than 40,000 pounds of crustaceans. A Taste of Covington started as a week-long locals’ event, but has expanded to a month-long wine and culinary celebration with weekly vintner’s dinners exploring Covington’s vibrant culinary scene. If an event is followed by the word “festival,” you’re sure to find great food.

There you have it. And if you’re feeling a little hungry about now, just head to the Northshore
