The Boot Launches a New Career Pipeline for Gulf Coast Veterans

The Boot has been awarded a $6.5 million, three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to build one of the most ambitious military-to-workforce programs on the Gulf Coast.

The Military and Veteran Gulf Coast Industrial Craft Careers Pipeline will recruit transitioning service members, veterans, and military family members and move them directly into high-demand careers in construction, manufacturing, defense, and aviation maintenance across Louisiana, Coastal Mississippi, and the Texas Gulf Coast. The award is a Rapid Reskill Employment Recovery National Dislocated Worker Grant through the Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration.

The Problem It Solves

Employers across the Gulf Coast are facing a skilled labor shortage in the industries powering the region's growth. At the same time, thousands of highly trained service members leave the military every year with exactly the technical skills, discipline, and leadership those industries need and no clear path to put them to work.

This program closes that gap. The Boot leads a coalition of regional and national partners to recruit military talent, fund their training, and connect them to employers ready to hire, with a target of placing each participant in a job within six months.

What Makes It Different

Cost, distance, and credential translation have long kept military talent out of the skilled trades pipeline. This program dismantles all three:

  • An agile workforce fund covers tuition, travel, lodging, and certification fees that typically sideline qualified candidates before they ever get started.
  • A national recruitment model finds military talent wherever they are and brings them to Gulf Coast employers.
  • A credentialing framework gives veterans full credit for the skills they already earned in uniform rather than making them prove themselves from scratch.

A Coalition Built to Deliver

The Boot serves as the lead organization, partnering with NextOp, the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), and the Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES) on recruitment, case management, and credentialing.

Training is delivered through a national network that includes ForgeNow, the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program, accelerated airframe and powerplant (A&P) aviation programs, MMR Group, Louisiana Community Colleges, and Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) chapters across the region. Every participant receives dedicated case management and an individualized plan from intake through placement and into retention coaching.

What's Next

The Boot is actively building out the program and will be announcing enrollment details and partner opportunities in the coming weeks. Veterans, service members, military families, and employers interested in the pipeline can learn more and connect at theboot.la.
